Sabres' Jordan Greenway gets clear update on trade rumors

1 hour ago 3

Jordan Greenway had some great moments for the Buffalo Sabres during their long-awaited return to the playoffs.

That doesn't mean the big forward will be around for another season in Western New York, though. A trade of Greenway would make a lot of sense.

It's all going to come down to cap space.

Greenway has a $4 million cap hit. That's despite being just a fourth-liner who has had injury trouble and not scored much at all.

If another team wants him, Greenway is a logical guy to trade as a cap casualty, writes Daily Faceoff's Matt Larkin in a new article.

"The Sabres will likely clear at least one goaltender from their logjam, but GM Jarmo Kekalainen must do more than that if he wants to re-sign Alex Tuch and extend Zach Benson and Peyton Krebs with only $12.9 million in cap space," Larkin writes. "Greenway brings great size and has been an effective checker in the past, but, sheesh, $4 million is far too much for a fourth-liner with four goals across his past two regular seasons combined."

If Buffalo ended up not bringing back Tuch, that would potentially leave the space to keep Greenway around. On the flip side, if Tuch leaves, the Sabres might look to give out some serious cash to a higher-end forward to replace him.

The Sabres generally have a high-quality group of young players who should grow up together and keep the hockey good in Buffalo for the long haul. The key for the Sabres will be surrounding the youth with the right experience.

Greenway isn't a bad guy to have, in a vacuum, but at his cost, it simply might not make sense for the Sabres.

If they look to move him, the cost won't be high for a receiving team, but Buffalo would be doing it to clear cap. They'd just have to find a team with more flexibility that could help them out.
