Ryan Reynolds targets wantaway Newcastle star to lead Wrexham's Premier League promotion push

Wrexham’s Hollywood script may be ready for its most ambitious chapter yet, with Newcastle striker Callum Wilson tipped as the next headline act.

Former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder Dietmar Hamann has urged Ryan Reynolds, who co-owns the club with Rob McElhenney, to pursue Wilson, whose future at St. James’ Park is increasingly uncertain.

Speaking to BettingLounge.co.uk, Hamann said, “Callum Wilson would be a great signing for Wrexham. Newcastle will probably improve their squad for next season, and it will be even harder to get game time.

"For Wrexham, if they want to get promoted into the Premier League, they will probably need to have a Premier League-level squad given the quality of the teams at the top of the Championship.”

Wilson, 33, is in the final weeks of his contract and has endured a turbulent 2024–25 season, scoring just once in an FA Cup clash against Birmingham City and failing to net in the Premier League for over a year.

A back and hamstring injury ruled him out for three months early in the season, and despite regaining fitness in February, he has made just two Premier League starts, both ending in defeat: a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in February and, just recently 1-0 loss to Arsenal.

Since joining Newcastle from Bournemouth for £20 million in 2020, Wilson has scored 47 league goals in 110 appearances but has seen game time diminish with Alexander Isak’s rise.

His exit could be confirmed if Newcastle secures Canadian striker Jonathan David, who is set to leave Lille this summer.

Wrexham, freshly promoted to the Championship after three successive promotions, is aiming even higher, and Wilson’s top-flight experience could be vital.

Reynolds wants Premier League: “That’s Our Goal”

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has made no secret of the club’s ambition. After sealing their rise to the championship, he declared, “Our goal is to make it to the Premier League.”

Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club for £2 million in 2021. Since then, Wrexham has climbed from the National League to the Championship in just three years.

Now, their sights are set on a fourth consecutive leap, and Callum Wilson could be the next step in their fairytale rise.
