Russell Westbrook free agency could draw in Heat, Timberwolves with NBA title goals

Russell Westbrook continues to put up numbers.

Whether that's enough for a team with NBA title aspirations to pursue him in free agency remains to be seen, but teams like the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves could potentially consider him.

Westbrook managed to average 15.2 points and 6.7 assists per game in the 2025-26 season, which is remarkable at this point in his career.

No, he's not a floor spacer, but maybe he'd give enough bench spark to make a difference.

The Heat and Wolves, for what it's worth, were two of five possible landing spots for Westbrook named by Edvinas Kuzas of BasketNews.

The Heat are definitely trending in the direction of signing experienced veterans to put around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

There's just one big problem with Russ in Miami: shooting. He'd be another less-than-stellar outside shooter to play with Giannis and Bam. Not ideal.

"His ability to push the tempo, attack the paint, and create easy looks for others could give Miami a different dynamic," Kuzas writes. "For a team trying to build a championship-level supporting cast around Giannis, Westbrook could be a risky but interesting veteran addition."

The Timberwolves might be the most interesting. There, Westbrook could simply be a direct backup to LaMelo Ball.

Minnesota wouldn't need someone even close to resembling a starter, because they've got Ball and Anthony Edwards. Westbrook's role would be as a microwave off the bench.

If that doesn't work out, maybe Westbrook ends up with another non-contender, like the Kings last season. But Russ would surely like to play meaningful basketball again before his career is done.
