(Bloomberg) — Secretary of State Marco Rubio will take part in Europe’s premier annual security conference and meetings with counterparts, just weeks after President Donald Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland generated alarm among US allies.

Rubio will participate in the Munich Security Conference taking place Feb. 13 to 15, the State Department said in a statement. He will then travel to Bratislava, Slovakia, for meetings with government officials to advance regional security interests, and discuss bilateral issues like nuclear energy as well as the nation’s military modernization and NATO commitments.

Rubio will finish his European tour with a visit to Budapest, Hungary, on Feb. 16 to meet with key officials and bolster US bilateral and regional interests, including the commitment to peace processes. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has repeatedly offered his capital as a city for the next potential meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to foster US efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Two months before Hungarian elections, the ruling Fidesz party led by Orban, long a Trump ally, lags behind the opposition in recent polls. Trump last week endorsed Orban, who uses similar nationalistic rhetoric and also takes an aggressive stance against undocumented immigration.

US, Danish and Greenland officials met in recent weeks to discuss a new arrangement, an attempt to satisfy Trump’s desire to see a greater American presence on the Arctic island that stops short of ceding it to the US. Trump last month threatened to impose tariffs on European nations opposing his effort to take possession of Greenland, prompted an outcry among America’s European allies.
