The Kansas City Royals will be without a former Rookie of the Year for the remainder of the season.
On Tuesday, the AL Central club announced that second baseman Jonathan India underwent labrum surgery.
India managed to hit just .167 with two home runs in 17 games during his second season with the Royals. Kansas City acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade for right-hander Brady Singer during the 2024-25 offseason.
“We knew he had been playing with an injured shoulder, but as he got a second opinion, he determined [surgery] was what needed to be done,” manager Matt Quatraro told reporters Tuesday afternoon, including MLB.com's Anne Rogers.

“Just had gotten to a point where it was really difficult for him to compete at the highest level, and for the future of his career, he needed to get this taken care of. I’m happy for him that he can. It’s a blow to us, but at the same time, he wasn’t himself out there.”
India will become a free agent after the season, but he has never come close to replicating his rookie year with the Reds.
In 2021, he managed a 4.1 bWAR while hitting 21 home runs with an .835 OPS in 150 games.
