Rory McIlroy doesn’t hold back after brutal shot at Scottish Open: ‘I’m so bad at golf’

Rory McIlroy is one of us.

The Northern Irishman may be a six-time Major winner, but he badly missed the green on the 16th hole of the Genesis Scottish Open on Sunday — and had a very common reaction to the fluffed shot.

“Oh my god, I’m so bad at golf,” he could be heard saying on the broadcast.

Of course, that is far from the case and one the broadcasters on the call quickly responded to McIlroy’s remarks with a bit of perspective.

“I’ll swap you any time,” he said.

“I’M SO BAD AT GOLF!” 🤬

Career Grand Slam winner, six-time Major Championship winner, has 45 professional wins, seven-time Race to Dubai Champion, three-time FedEx Cup Champion, six-time Ryder Cup winner who has spent more than 100 weeks at World Number One…

“A highly relatable sport,” his colleague added on-air.

McIlroy’s approach shot on the par-4 ended up far away from the green and into the rough.

He wound up bogeying the hole but recovered with a birdie on the 17th hole and a par on the 18th.

Despite a very respectable weekend in Scotland, McIlroy finished tied for seventh at 12-under par — five strokes behind winner Tom Kim.

Min Woo Lee finished as runner-up at 15-under, while Robert Macintyre, Keita Nakajima, Johnny Keefer and Matt Fitzpatrick all finished tied at 13-under.

Despite his claim that he is “so bad at golf”, McIlroy has had an impressive year thus far.

He defended his Masters title in April as he held off Scottie Scheffler by one stroke and also finished second at the Genesis Invitational in February.

McIlroy also finished tied for seventh at the PGA Championship, before finishing up with a 64 on Sunday after a difficult round a day before.

He’ll now hope to improve in The Open next week.

“Obviously there was some good in there today, but there was some bad as well,” he said on Sunday.

“It’s nice to sign this week off with a good score but I know I need to do a bit of work between now and next Thursday to feel really comfortable with my game.”
