The Atlanta Braves have had a great week, to say the least, which is exactly what they needed after a brutal stretch that caused them to lose a significant lead in the NL East.
The Braves swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in what could ultimately be a deciding series for the National League playoff picture. The final game of the series was an absolute master class from Chris Sale.
“Chris Sale finished Thursday's eighth inning with 97 pitches, then walked the length of his dugout, found Braves manager Walt Weiss and left no doubt,” ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez wrote. “Twelve pitches later, Sale finished what he started, preserving Atlanta's 1-0 lead to clinch a sweep of the reigning champion Los Angeles Dodgers and prove again that, at 37, he's still as good as ever.”
The Colorado Rockies came into town after that, and the Braves won on Friday before earning a dramatic victory on Saturday afternoon.
“The Atlanta Braves beat the Rockies 2-1. Michael Harris II drove in two, Martín Pérez dealt, Brent Suter covered 2 1/3 innings and Didier Fuentes got the save,” The Athletic’s Jesus Cano wrote.
However, an interesting sequence of events unfolded on Saturday. Rockies rookie Cole Carrigg missed a diving catch that allowed the Braves to take the lead. After the play, Carrigg appeared to make a middle-finger gesture toward fans. Colorado manager Warren Schaeffer was not happy with the incident.
“Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer announced Sunday morning that he is keeping rookie center fielder Cole Carrigg out of the starting lineup for a couple of days for his inappropriate gesture to fans at Truist Park during Saturday afternoon’s 2-1 loss to the Braves. The incident occurred right after the Braves scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Carrigg dived for Michael Harris II’s fly ball and came up empty, resulting in a two-run double,” MLB.com’s Thomas Harding wrote.
Emotions are a part of every player’s experience, but a professional cannot lose his cool like that. This should be a learning experience for Carrigg, and it appears the Rockies are using the situation as a teaching moment for their young player.
His benching did not last long, as he entered Sunday’s game as a pinch hitter. It is difficult to say whether there was a true teaching moment for the rookie, considering he essentially just did not start the game. Regardless, there is no place in baseball for that kind of gesture toward a fan.
