The Houston Rockets entered the 2025-26 season with legitimate championship aspirations after pulling off a blockbuster trade to acquire Kevin Durant. Expectations were sky-high, but the season ultimately ended in disappointment. Houston's title hopes came crashing down with a frustrating first-round playoff exit to an injury-depleted Los Angeles Lakers team.
One player who left a lasting impression on the Rockets during that series was Lakers veteran Marcus Smart. With Los Angeles dealing with multiple injuries, Smart took on a significantly expanded role and delivered a series of impactful performances to help eliminate Houston from the playoffs.
Now, the Rockets appear interested in bringing that same veteran presence to their own roster. According to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, Houston is expected to pursue Smart if he becomes available in free agency.
“The Rockets do, however, loom as a possible free agent destination for another one of Udoka's former players in Boston: Marcus Smart. League sources say that Smart, who is expected to draw interest from Houston and possibly other teams in free agency, is very much giving consideration to declining his $5.4 million player option for next season with the Lakers before Monday's deadline to do so and then proceed to the open market,” the report read.
Smart is seen as one of the NBA's premier defensive guards and brings a wealth of postseason experience along with proven leadership qualities. His defensive mindset and veteran presence could provide valuable guidance for Houston's emerging young stars, particularly Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard.
For now, the Rockets must wait to see whether Smart declines his 5.4 million player option before Monday's deadline. If he becomes a free agent, Houston and the Lakers could find themselves competing for his services.
