Rivals Maul guide

Rivals recently added the Maul, a melee weapon that can be used to deal damage when close to your opponents. This mallet specializes in knocking back the targeted opposition far away, creating some much-needed breathing room. As one would expect from a hammer of its size, the Maul is quite slow to swing, but its damage is not the point. Rather, its utility makes it a weapon worth adding to your arsenal.

Here’s a quick guide on the Maul and how to use it effectively in Rivals matches.

Breaking down the Maul in Rivals

The Maul is a comically large hammer using which you can knock opponents back further than most other weapons. You can get it for 400 Keys or by leveling up the basic Season Pass to level 35 during Season 2.

Its damage rating sits at 75, which makes it over twice as lethal as a weapon like the scythe. Mitigating its damage rather severely is its attack speed, which is to say its DPS is quite low in comparison to most weapons. It has a 25% reduced movement speed penalty and a cooldown of 1.5 seconds. You will likely only land a single hit while using this weapon.

This is a straightforward weapon with a limited use case. As such, it would be wise to be aware of the situations when it can be used, as missing any hits can leave you wide open. After all, it would be unfortunate to get sniped mid-hammer swing.

How to use

Considering its slow attack speed and rather niche usage, using the Maul is a risky move in most situations. Finding the right openings to try and get a hit off is not easy in most situations, especially in duels and head-on combat encounters. So, your best bet is to either get the drop on your target or lure them into a corner where they can’t see the swing coming.

Getting the drop on someone is much easier in a match with multiple opponents, such as Team Deathmatch or any duel mode other than 1v1. Approach your opponent from the back, prepare your hammer, and swing away. When hit, they will be stunned for a while, giving you the opportunity to secure the kill.

Luring the opponent into the desired area is not a reliable tactic in any game mode. It’s not possible to accurately predict how the opposing party will react to your luring attempts. They could take the bait, or they may just throw an explosive or use a ranged alternative to flush you out. If you happen to run into a situation where a player is belligerently following you and peppering you with gunfire, they may potentially run into your Maul.

Consider pairing it with the War Horn to mitigate the movement speed penalty, or use it with an ability that freezes the opponent in place. Even so, you are better off scoring headshots on a frozen opponent rather than using the Maul for a massive knockback.
