St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino has agreed to an amended contract with the Red Storm, according to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein.
The 73-year-old Pitino received a significant raise after leading St. John’s to its first Sweet Sixteen since 1999. This comes after St. John's was bounced by Duke 80-75 on Friday night. Many wondered if the legendary coach would be returning after the Red Storm posted a 30-7 record to end the season.
After more than five decades in coaching, Pitino is one of college basketball’s journeyman head coaches with notable stops at Providence, Kentucky, Louisville, Iona, and St. John’s.
Here are three takeaways from Pitino's new deal.
What's the new deal worth?
No details were provided on what exactly was agreed upon between Pitino and St. John's. However, his previous deal inked in 2023 was a 6-year, 20 million deal or roughly $3.3 million per year. Since he got a raise, this put him among the top for non-Power Four programs.
Pitino is now the second-highest-paid coach in the Big East
As it stands right now, Pitino is behind UConn's Dan Hurley, who is third nationally at $8.3 million per year, according to USA TODAY Sports. But it's unclear how far behind he is in the rankings.
Where does this put Pitino nationally?
Pitino was previously making approximately $3.3 million annually, which put him 40th overall, based on USA TODAY Sports data. If this new deal bumps him up to over $5 million per year, he'll easily break into the top ten. Not saying that's where he's at, but it would make sense considering what Pitino was making three years ago.
