RFK Racing has decided it will appeal the penalty it was issued by NASCAR against the No. 17 following the May 11 Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway.

The infraction, you may recall, stemmed from the amount of reinforcement placed between the front bumper cover and protective foam inside the shell. Specifically, the team allegedly exceeded the two-inch maximum bonded material allowed by the Cup Series rule book.

Driver Chris Buescher was docked 60 driver points and five playoff points. The team was docked 60 points and five playoff points in addition to a $75,000 fine. Crew chief Scott Graves was suspended for two races and voluntarily served the first of them over the weekend at North Wilkesboro -- the non-points All-Star Race.

He will also sit out this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The appeal, whenever it is heard, will be about getting their points back.

“After a thorough review of the penalties issued to the No. 17 Ford Mustang, RFK Racing has decided to appeal NASCAR’s decision,” RFK Racing said in a statement posted to its social media accounts Monday. “We respect NASCAR’s commitment to fair competition and appreciate the opportunity to engage in the appeals process.”

Buescher was 14th in the championship standings, 33 points above the provisional playoff cutline. The points deduction leaves him 24th and 27 points out of the Round of 16.
