Remembering Catherine O’Hara, fashion icon

From her avant-garde getups as “Schitt’s Creek” matriarch Moira Rose to her “Home Alone” power suits and goth-glam “Beetlejuice” costumes, Catherine O’Hara has embodied some seriously stylish characters onscreen.

But the Hollywood legend — who died on Jan. 30, 2026 at the age of 71 — was a true fashion icon offscreen as well, with a keen eye for clothes that made her one of our absolute favorites to watch on the red carpet, particularly in recent years.

Working closely with her longtime stylist, Andrew Gelwicks, the award-winning Canadian actress topped best-dressed lists in looks from labels like Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, Thom Browne and Valentino, often in Moira Rose’s preferred color palette.

“I’ve always loved black and white, and I think it can be very clean and works anywhere,” O’Hara told Vogue in 2020. “And then working on ‘Schitt’s Creek’ for six years really just strengthened my love for black and white even more. It’s bold and it’s strong and it’s graphic and cartoony and cool all at the same time. Classic.”

And it was her role on the TV comedy that catapulted O’Hara to wider fashion-star status; her first front-row appearance wasn’t until 2020, when she attended a Tom Ford show in a glossy, croc-embossed skirt suit by the designer. (“I couldn’t believe how serious people were,” she told Vogue of the experience. “There was so little laughing or smiling; it’s so intense. I just felt like a happy alien in that place.”

Ultimately, both O’Hara and the chic characters she played later in her career redefined what “age-appropriate” dressing can look like, proving that style has no expiration date.

“I’d like women, especially ones of a certain age, to be influenced by Moira’s wonderfully daring sense of fashion,” she told WSJ in 2019. “Don’t be afraid to wear wigs.”

Below, a look back at some of O’Hara’s most memorable red carpet moments.
