The Detroit Red Wings have announced today that they have extended Patrick Kane to a 1 year $3 million contract. The contract also includes up to $4 million in potential bonuses.
This news is not surprising as most pundits expected Showtime to reup in Detroit. But the closer July 1 came without a deal some speculation was starting to surface that Kane might look elsewhere. This is good news for the Wings to extend the legendary winger. Patrick Kane's impact on this Red Wings core during his 2 year tenure has been paramount as he has excelled post hip resurfacing surgery. The Red Wings powerplay notably has been dangerous ever since he arrived.
The 36 year old future hall of famer scored 21 goals and added 38 assists for a total of 59 points in 72 games for Detroit last season. This was a slight regression from his 47 points in 50 games the prior season with the club. However, his game saw noticeable improvement last season when the Red Wings fired former coach Derek Lalonde in favor of Todd McLellan. Over the course of his 18 year career he has recorded 492 goals and 851 assists for 1,343 points in 1,302 games.
Kaner will look to help this Red Wings team make the playoffs next season. The team has narrowly missed out in both of his seasons so far with the club. Kane has not seen playoff hockey since 2023 when he was briefly with the New York Rangers after being traded there for the Chicago Blackhawks.
