The Boston Red Sox have gotten themselves back to a .500 record after a win against the New York Mets on Tuesday, though it didn't come as they might have planned.
Making his return from a stint on the injured list, starting pitcher Walker Buehler lasted just two innings before being ejected for stepping off the mound and arguing with home plate umpire Mike Estabrook. Buehler clearly felt the official had missed a strike call on Juan Soto after Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez sprung to his feet and attempted to throw out Francisco Lindor as he stole second base.
“Buehler took immediate issue, with cameras picking up him telling Estabrook that the pitch was ‘right down the (expletive) middle’ more than once,’” Chris Cotillo reported for MassLive.
Immediately after the game, Buehler apologized for putting his teammates and the Red Sox bullpen in that position by being ejected, though he didn’t walk back his criticism of the call. Then, several hours later, the pitcher took to social media to express himself more freely.
Buehler replied to an X post that highlighted Lindor celebrating his ejection from second base.
“I wouldn’t want me out there either,” Buehler wrote. “Sad thing is the BULLPEN is full of (expletive) animals.”

As the Mets ultimately lost their third game in a row thanks to a strong performance from that bullpen, Buehler’s message might have stung a bit. He tacked on two more words in response to Lindor’s reaction: “Tough choice.”
While the Red Sox will need more innings out of Buehler in his next start, perhaps his fiery performance on Tuesday can do something to ignite the team. The Red Sox are looking to climb back to a winning record and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
