The Boston Red Sox become the latest team to give up on Jordan Hicks.
The right-handed pitcher is a tantalizing talent, but he never has put together consistent seasons for any of the teams he's played for, and on Sunday, he was traded.
Boston sent Hicks to the Chicago White Sox, in a deal reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan.
The full trade:
- White Sox get: Jordan Hicks, David Sandlin
- Red Sox get: Gage Ziehl
Hicks, 29, had a 6.95 ERA in 34 appearances split between the Giants and the Red Sox in 2025.
He began the year with San Francisco and had a 6.47 ERA in 13 games, and then they moved him to Boston, where his ERA was 8.20 in 21 games.
Hicks has a career 4.41 ERA and has also pitched for the Cardinals and Blue Jays.
The other player going to Chicago is 24-year old righty David Sandlin, a 6-foot-4 pitcher out of the University of Oklahoma. He had a 3.61 ERA in Double-A in 2025 that grew to 7.61 in Triple-A.
Boston takes a big bet on the prospect Ziehl, who was a fourth-round pick by the Yankees in 2024 out of the University of Miami and is already in his third organization.
The 22-year old starred in high school in upstate New York at Penfield HS, and he has reached Double-A in the minor leagues.
Across three levels in 2025, Ziehl had a 4.12 ERA with 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings.
Ziehl began his college career as a closer for the Hurricanes, but he started by the end of his career there and has been a starter in most of his professional appearances.
The Red Sox will likely allow Ziehl to keep starting in the hopes of using his fastball-slider combo in the majors in a few years.
