Red Sox sign ex-Cardinals, Giants reliever amid 8-game winning streak

The Boston Red Sox are in the midst of another lengthy winning streak, capturing their eighth straight victory in walk-off fashion against the Chicago White Sox last night. 

As the Red Sox attempt to catch up to the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East standings, they've added bullpen depth via the free agent market. 

According to Tom Caron of NESN, the Red Sox have signed right-hander John Brebbia to a minor league deal. 

"Red Sox have signed John Brebbia to a minor-league deal per sources. Originally from Sharon, MA," Caron wrote on X. "The 36-yr old righty had a 1.62 in 16.2 innings w/ AAA Albuquerque. Contending teams can’t have enough depth." 

Brebbia began the season with the Colorado Rockies and returned to the NL West club after a brief stint in the minors with the Minnesota Twins. 

He allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings with the Rockies, striking out just two of the 21 batters he faced.

Brebbia's results in recent seasons have not been good, but there's no harm in the Red Sox seeing what he can do at Triple-A Worcester. 

The best season of Brebbia's career may have been his rookie year in 2017 with the St. Louis Cardinals, when he posted a 2.44 ERA and struck out 51 batters in 51.2 innings. That season, he allowed fewer than seven hits per nine innings. 

Brebbia can also serve as injury insurance for the Red Sox. He has thrown 382.2 innings in the Majors.
