For the past couple weeks, the Boston Red Sox have been the hottest team in baseball, winning 13 of their last 15 games. However, in that stretch, they’ve lost some starting pitchers to the IL in Connelly Early and Ranger Suarez.
Because of that, they called up Patrick Sandoval to take over Early’s spot, and he dominated in his debut. As for Suarez’s start today, Boston elected to call up their No. 25 prospect Eduardo Rivera, who’s a long reliever.
What’s crazy about this is they have another starting pitcher that has MLB experience in AAA: Brayan Bello. However, Bello’s disaster of a season might be the reason they decided not to recall him.
Bello was horrible for Boston this season

Last season, Bello finished with an 11-9 record, and a 3.35 ERA. It looked like he was trending towards being a reliable starter for Boston, but it turns out nothing could be further from the truth.
This season, Bello was 2-6 with a 6.34 ERA, 44 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.672 over just 61 innings pitched. He was one of the worst pitchers in the MLB, and Boston could not keep him on the roster if they wanted to win. So, they demoted him to AAA and replaced him with Jake Bennett, who has been dominant in his place.
He’s not doing much better in AAA

Down in AAA, Bello isn’t doing much better than he was in the MLB. He’s had four starts, hasn’t won or lost a game, and posted a 4.34 ERA, 22 Ks, with a WHIP of 1.236.
While his numbers are better, they aren’t good enough to give himself another shot on the big league roster. And with how Boston is doing right now, throwing a wrench like Bello into the well-tuned gears of the Red Sox doesn’t seem like a smart idea.
Bello’s future is pretty unclear

So, at the moment Bello’s future with Boston is pretty unclear. He probably won’t get a shot at the rotation anytime soon, so unless the bullpen is wracked with injuries, he probably will be in AAA for the rest of the year.
And if that’s the case, it might be in Boston’s best interest to trade him. Someone else might be ready to take a chance on him, especially if they are in dire need of starting pitching.
