The Boston Red Sox have been pretty disappointing this season, with a record of 39-48, and five games out of the last spot in the Wild Card. When the team was expected to be a World Series contender, being where they are currently is a major disappointment.
However, it seems they are trying to get back on track, thanks to their elite pitching. In their past nine games, they are 7-2, and Boston is looking to get their second sweep in that time tonight against the Los Angeles Angels.
Red Sox CBO Craig Breslow has caught a lot of flak for this year’s roster, as he did let Alex Bregman walk, but he has made some good additions as well.
This year’s offseason additions exceed last year’s

In terms of WAR, this year’s set of offseason additions is quite better than the players they replaced. Breslow brought in 16 new guys so far this season, and nine of them have a positive bWAR.
Willson Contreras leads the charge with a 3.5 bWAR, while Sonny Gray, Caleb Durbin and Ranger Suarez are all tied for second with 1.9 bWAR.
As a group, they have a nine bWAR, while the people they replaced have a seven bWAR together, with only three guys at or above a 1.2 bWAR.
Breslow isn’t completely off the hook

Even with these moves though, Breslow isn’t entirely off hook. While the worst hitters on the team are mostly people Breslow didn’t have a hand in acquiring, his analytics department has a big hand in how the players train.
Driveline, the company Boston brought in to help with analytics, is a big reason why some hitters are struggling. A great example of this is Durbin, who left Driveline to seek outside help, and as soon as he did, he became a top slugger for Boston.
Driveline has since parted ways with Boston, and since it happened, Boston is 10-6, and started this streak.
This season will truly decide Breslow’s fate in Boston. If they can somehow make the playoffs, and actually do well, his job may be safe. Anything short of that, and the Red Sox may be looking for a new GM this upcoming offseason.
