Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet took a baseball to the nose during his start Sunday against the Twins — and he stayed in the game.
The lefthander took a line drive to the face against the Twins but managed to stay in the game and complete five innings.
Crochet recorded six strikeouts and one earned run in the effort, but the Twins defeated the Red Sox 5-4 in the end.
“Fine,” Crochet told reporters about how he was feeling. “It barely grazed me, obviously, just more shooken up at the initial impact than anything.”
The line drive off Crochet’s nose occurred in the top of the fourth inning when Carlos Correa hit a screamer back toward the mound.
The ball deflected off Crochet’s glove and hit him directly on the nose.
Medical staff rushed to the mound to care for Crochet, but after a brief examination and a few warm-up pitches, he remained in the game.
“I immediately go touch my nose just to see if it felt normal,” Crochet told reporters. “It was numb at first, just, like I said, from the initial impact.”
He seemingly showed no signs of diminished pitching and retired the next batter, Jonah Bride, to end the inning.
Crochet threw 89 total pitches, and he now holds a 2.02 ERA with 56 strikeouts across 49 innings following his latest effort.
He inked a six-year, $170 million pact with the Red Sox to remain with the club long-term before the season.
