The Boston Red Sox have the second-worst record in the American League.
It's safe to say the AL East clubs are not true contenders for a postseason spot. Barring a massive turnaround, the Red Sox are likely to sell at the trade deadline.
That could mean trading away a few veteran players. One of Boston's starting pitchers, a three-time All-Star, could draw trade interest.
According to a report from Tim Healy of the Boston Globe, right-hander Sonny Gray would be open to waiving his no-trade clause.
“If someone came to me from the Red Sox and made a decision that that’s the direction that this team was going to go, I would be open for a conversation,” Gray told Healy.
Gray was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in November in exchange for pitchers Richard Fitts and Brandon Clarke.
"That swap saw a rebuilding Cardinals club working to boost its farm system and trim payroll to a win-now Red Sox club looking to build out its rotation. Months later, it’s the Cardinals who are in contention and the Sox who find themselves weighing a possible reset," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.
The 36-year-old has arguably been the best starter in Boston's rotation, posting a 3.12 ERA in 69.1 innings.

Gray would be a pure rental for any club that shows interest in him. He becomes a free agent at the conclusion of the season.
Teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs could use pitching reinforcments before the final few months of the regular season.
