After making an offseason trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for Wilson Contreras, the Boston Red Sox are jam-packed at first base.
Contreras will play at the corner infield position with the Red Sox after spending the majority of his career behind the plate at catcher. That could lead to minimal playing time for Boston's primary first baseman in 2023, the left-handed hitting Triston Casas.
Torn cartilage in Casas' rib cage limited the former first-round pick to 63 games in 2024, and he played just 29 games last season after suffering a season-ending ruptured left patellar tendon in May.
Casas had a breakout season in 2023, hitting 24 home runs with a .865 OPS. But FanSided's Mark Powell believes it's in the 26-year-old's best interest for the Red Sox to facilitate a trade.
NL East team named best landing spot for Casas
"To call Casas a star at this juncture is a bit of a stretch. However, if he can stay on the field and regain that same 20-plus power he showcased in 2023, then perhaps he could find himself again," Powell wrote Thursday.
"For now, that'll likely have to happen on a losing team. So, why not the Washington Nationals? Washington's current first base options are Andrés Chaparro and Luis Garcia Jr. There's no harm in letting Casas compete."
A move to the Nationals would open a clearer path to playing time for Casas, giving him a better opportunity to prove he still has pop in his bat and can play serviceable defense at first base.
