Red Sox predicted to land Diamondbacks star in last minute deal

The Boston Red Sox, and every other team looking to contend, have less than 12 hours to make trades to help their team. The Red Sox could be looking to add some pitching.

It's unclear whether the Red Sox would be willing to trade prospects for a rental starter. However, options may be limited, and the team clearly needs starting pitching. Garrett Crochet has been great, and Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito have played better as of late, but the team still has a 4.04 ERA from its starters.

While they may be willing to swing a blockbuster to add a pitcher with control, a high-priced rental may be what the Red Sox end up with by the deadline. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller predicted the Red Sox would acquire Merrill Kelly from the Arizona Diamondbacks in this package:

  • Red Sox receive: RHP Merrill Kelly
  • Diamondbacks receive: OF James Thibbs III and LHP Hayden Mullins

Thibbs is the team's No .5 prospect and Mullins is No. 17. Two Top 30 prospects for a couple of months of Kelly is a high price. However, Kelly would make an instant impact.

"Though there are quite a few quality multi-year starters on this year's trade block, going the rental route would appear to make the most sense for Boston, which theoretically already has a full rotation and then some in place for next season once Kutter Crawford, Tanner Houck and Patrick Sandoval are healthy again," wrote Miller.

Kelly has a 3.22 ERA in 22 starts this season. He is having one of the best years of his career, and the Diamondbacks are clearly signaling their intention to sell. They already traded Eugenio Suárez and Kelly could be next.
