Red Sox may be regretting their decision to hold onto Jarren Duran due to brutal June slump

The Boston Red Sox are coming off a rocky series with the Colorado Rockies (no pun intended), where they went in expecting to get a sweep, and left losing the series two to one.

Now, they head to the Bronx to face their eternal rivals in the New York Yankees, who are pitching the top AL Cy Young contender, Cam Schlittler. They need their bats at full force, and at the moment, that’s not happening.

One of the most disappointing bats the Sox need the most right now is that of All-Star Jarren Duran’s, who was on fire last month, but in June has been one of the worst in the MLB.

Duran was electric in May

In May, it looked like prime 2024 Duran was on his way back to help Boston. In the second half of May, Duran was slashing .333/.385/.684/1.069 with three doubles, a triple, five home runs and 14 RBI in just 13 games.

The hope was he would continue this streak into June, but whatever clicked in May was immediately shut off with the changing of the calendar.

Ever since June 1st, Duran’s bat has been non-existent. The first few days were worrying, and then things really started to slip. In 19 games this month, Duran is hitting .143 with an OPS of .422, and has struck out 30 times. He was hitting .219 on the season at the end of May, which is now down to .199.

It seems his struggles have definitely not gone unnoticed by the Red Sox staff, as it was seen he was having a tough conversation in the background of an interview with Sonny Gray. If he can’t get something to click like he did in May, some consequences may await.

Craig Breslow really messed up

Boston's Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow had teams chomping at the bit to get Duran this offseason, and instead, he decided to keep his outfielder and the logjam that comes with it. This is just one of his many mistakes that keep piling on, and soon, a mistake is going to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

However, Duran is safe at the moment with Roman Anthony still on the IL. However, whenever he returns, the Sox probably need to find a buyer for Duran, and get pennies on the dollar they could’ve gotten six months ago.
