Red Sox make third base decision following Alex Bregman injury

Despite a 19-5 blowout win against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, Alex Bregman leaving the game in the third inning due to injury left the Boston Red Sox short-handed.

Bregman got injured rounding first base after a single against Orioles pitcher Cade Povich in the third inning, instantly signaling for a trainer and going to the locker room. Bregman having to miss any time would be a major blow to the Red Sox, as the two-time All-Star is slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.

Though it's unclear if Bregman will have to miss time due to this quad injury, which he is set to get an MRI on, the Red Sox have no intention of having Rafael Devers take over at third in his stead, according to Bleacher Report's Adam Wells.

"Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed to reporters that Bregman will have imaging done on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury," Wells wrote. "Cora also noted Rafael Devers is unlikely to take over at third base if Bregman goes on the injured list, but he didn't rule out bringing up shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer."

"In describing the injury, Bregman went on to say he had a quad injury during the 2021 season with the Houston Astros that felt 'way worse' than this one. He spent more than two months on the IL due to that injury. Losing Bregman for any length of time is a huge blow to Boston's lineup. Eric Sogard is starting at third base in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader."

Devers made his desire to remain at third base known in the offseason, but he has been excelling after a move to designated hitter. It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox finally call up Marcelo Mayer in the wake of Bregman's injury, or if they put Devers back out on the field.
