Red Sox make brutal Garrett Crochet roster move that they cannot afford

1 hour ago 2

The 2026 Boston Red Sox are 12-18 and have already fired Alex Cora and multiple other coaches this season. It's a brutal season, and things are only getting worse.

Craig Breslow's roster isn't playing up to par, and there are a ton of questions about the roster long-term. But the Red Sox got some truly brutal news on Wednesday morning.

As Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports, the Red Sox are placing ace Garrett Crochet on the 15-day injured list. It's a move this team cannot afford with their poor record, and it's another brutal blow for the Red Sox in 2026.

Red Sox lose Garrett Crochet to IL

"Garrett Crochet to IL with shoulder inflammation and Nate Eaton called up," Cotillo reports Wednesday morning.

The Red Sox are now down Crochet and Sonny Gray in their starting rotation, and will need Ranger Suarez, Connelly Early, Bryan Bello, and Payton Tolle to pitch incredibly well going forward.

Crochet's last outing came in Cora's last game with the Red Sox, in a 17-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles, where Crochet went six innings of shutout ball on the road.

On the season, he's struggled with velocity at times and has had a 6.30 ERA with a 3-3 record and 37 strikeouts in six starts before landing on the injured list.

This is some brutal news for the Red Sox, as the last-place team in the American League East that's already fired its manager is now down their staff ace.

Things are not going well for the Red Sox this season, and losing their best pitcher for an extended period of time, especially with this kind of injury, is not what this team can afford at all right now.
