The Boston Red Sox have done a lot to improve their rotation already this offseason, trading for Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox and signing both Patrick Sandoval and Walker Buehler in free agency.
However, that's not all they've attempted to accomplish. According to The Boston Globe's Alex Speier, the Red Sox had trade conversations with the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Winter Meetings centered around young stud Jared Jones.
Jones, 23, was Pittsburgh's second-round pick in the 2020 MLB draft out of La Mirada High School in La Mirada, California. He debuted with the Pirates in 2024, making 24 starts for the club and posting a 4.14 ERA, 1.192 WHIP and 9.8 K/9 over 121 2/3 innings.
Pittsburgh was likely asking a lot for Jones' services, which could've included at least one of Boston's top prospects (Roman Anthony or Marcelo Mayer) and another talented young player (Triston Casas or Wilyer Abreu).
The Red Sox have been able to upgrade their roster without giving up too much this far, but if they get desperate and feel what they've done isn't enough, another move could come.
