Red Sox get bad news on potential Tarik Skubal trade despite 15-game win streak

The Boston Red Sox went on a 15-game win streak, re-emerging as legitimate postseason contenders despite looking like a clear seller at the start of July.

While their win streak was snapped Wednesday night in the second leg of a doubleheader, the Red Sox are still in good shape to be buyers at the deadline now. However, when it comes to Tarik Skubal, the Red Sox got some bad news.

As The Athletic trio of Katie Woo, Patrick Mooney, and Will Sammon shared, the Red Sox, in the Skubal trade sweepstakes, are in the same tier as 12 other teams with the unfortunate label of: "Tier 7: Playoff contenders, but also not happening."

"Regardless of the specific behind why a team finds itself in this tier, the general theme is shared: The team's situation doesn't line up with justifying the cost of acquiring Skubal," The Athletic trio writes.

For the Red Sox, as much fun as trading for Skubal would be, as it'd give them an even better rotation, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Boston would be better off spending the fortune it'd cost to acquire Skubal to pursue help at the middle-infield spots, at catcher, or maybe even in the bullpen for some extra help.

The Red Sox have a good enough rotation as it is, even considering Garrett Crochet and Connelly Early on the injured list right now.

Skubal would help, but with Sonny Gray, Payton Tolle, and Jake Bennett pitching well right now, with Ranger Suarez, Early, and Crochet as injured starters who could come back later this season, they really don't need Skubal.

While The Athletic trio is giving the Red Sox some bad news on a potential pursuit of Skubal, the Detroit Tigers' back-to-back Cy Young winner isn't really someone the Red Sox should seriously pursue this summer anyway.

Skubal to the Red Sox is "not happening" this summer, and for good reason. The fit just doesn't make sense, especially taking into account the massive cost it'd take to acquire him from the Tigers.
