The Boston Red Sox thought they were going to get another Garrett Crochet when they called up Payton Tolle, and after his debut, it seemed like they were going to. However, after his past two starts, it seems like Tolle’s going to have growing pains.
According to Sox manager Alex Cora, Tolle has been moved to the bullpen for the remainder of the season.

Tolle’s debut was a sight to behold, as he went 5.1 innings and got eight strikeouts while giving no runs until the reliever after him gave up his inherited runner. Sox fans were expecting more of that, but in his second start, that didn’t happen.
In his second start, Tolle got blown up. He gave up five earned runs in three innings, and gave up two homers. In his third start, he went two innings, and gave up two homers again, along with two earned runs.
With those starts, Tolle’s ERA ballooned to 7.84, and his WHIP to 1.645. It seems opposing hitters realized they just needed to sit on his flaming fastballs, as all his other pitches didn’t seem to challenge the zone all that well.
Hopefully short bursts of Tolle is what will work, where he comes in, throws 100+ mph pitches to strike out the side, and calls it a day. Then, in the offseason, the Sox develop his other pitches, as he could be an amazing starter.
