Fans of the Boston Red Sox are starting to believe the organization actually has the best chance to land the top free agent of this offseason, Juan Soto. This comes after Soto’s first meeting with the Sox left him very impressed.
The top two contenders other than the Sox are the two New York teams, the Yankees and the Mets.
The Yankees are the incumbent, as Soto just finished his contract with the team, competing and losing in the World Series. The Yankees may beat the Sox’s offer, but then they run into the problem of payroll and no farm.
The Yankees are already paying billions for Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, Giancarlo Stanton, and Carlos Rodon, all who are aging stars. They have two to three more years of contention before they need more young players. Basically, they’re a sinking ship.
The Mets will offer the most money, but they aren’t proven winners, and they have a lot of problems they need to fix, and getting Soto won’t magically do it.
Finally the Red Sox have the capital, the history of winning, and have a future in their farm. If Soto’s top concern is his future, then the Sox are the answer.
Thinking of the Red Sox and the Soto sweepstakes, if John Henry acts like the John Henry of old and makes a competitive offer (it does not have to be the highest), the Yankees and Mets cannot compete with Boston ‘s sale pitch.
The Yankees probably will beat the Red Sox offer…
