The Boston Red Sox are shaking things up in a surprising way.
On Saturday night, they designated for assignment left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb.
Newcomb, a former first-round pick by the Angels in 2014, has a 3.83 ERA this season.
He signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox this winter, then made it up to the majors after a number of injuries.
The Red Sox will now have one week to either trade Newcomb or get him through waivers. A team very well might claim the big lefty with a strong pedigree who is having his best pitching season in a few years.

Boston made the move to call up righty Luis Guerrero from Triple-A.
Guerrero has pitched 14 innings in MLB over the past two seasons and not allowed a run.

If this is it for Newcomb in Boston, it's a bit of a disappointing ending for a local kid.
He attended Middleborough High School in Massachusetts, then took the unlikely path from the University of Hartford (Conn.) to a first-round pick.
Now, he might be looking for a new baseball home. At least he's got the solid 2025 statistics to help his cause.
