Red Sox could trade for $56 million former Cy Young to boost rotation

The Boston Red Sox come into the final day of the trade deadline period in hopes of improving their roster. Late on Wednesday, they made their first move, acquiring Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Matz should help them boost their bullpen as the stretch run of the 2025 season begins. However, there are more needs for Boston to address.

They could still use a frontline starting pitcher to go with Garrett Crochet. There are a few key starters available.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report made some final trade deadline predictions. One of his predictions was that Sandy Alcantara would go to the American League East, and he put together a package for the Red Sox.

"Both Boston and New York desperately need at least one starting pitcher and could be willing to give up quite a few prospects to get Alcantara," Miller wrote.

Alcantara has struggled this season. He is 6-9 with a 6.36 ERA in 21 starts with the Miami Marlins. He did recently pitch five scoreless innings against the Cardinals.

This hypothetical trade would see the Red Sox giving up prospects Yoelin Cespedes and Jhostynxon Garcia, which isn't a bad return for the Marlins. Alcantara has two years of team control plus a club option for 2027.

It is important to remember that Alcantara is recovering from Tommy John surgery. But with the Marlins likely out of contention, a change of scenery and the chance to join a contender might rejuvenate him.

The Red Sox need another frontline starter. Alcantara could be the missing piece.

We'll see if they manage to land the veteran right-hander.
