Red Sox could revisit Nationals to land Luis Garcia Jr. in final trade deadline push

There’s just about 24 hours until the trade deadline, and the Boston Red Sox need to get busy if they want to compete in an ever-changing MLB.

The Red Sox have plenty of targets, but they aren’t hitting on much at the moment. A better use of their remaining time might be going with a trade partner they’ve dealt with recently, such as the Washington Nationals, who they could make a deal with for the third time in a year.

Boston has recent history with Washington

In the past nine months, the Red Sox have made two separate deals with the Nationals, one of which was a massive success.

The first was a pitcher prospect swap, where they dealt RHP Luis Perales to Washington, in return for LHP Jake Bennett. This has been a huge success for Boston, as Bennett has posted a 6-4 record, a 2.74 ERA, 46 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.975 over 65 innings pitched for the Red Sox.

The second trade they made just recently was for infielder Curtis Mead, who was the first right-handed slugger they acquired as hopefully the first of a few deadline deals. However, Mead broke his wrist in his second AB with the Sox when he was hit by a pitch, so he will be out for the foreseeable future.

Luis Garcia Jr. could be their final target

Now, Boston may have one last move to make with Washington. That would be acquiring another slugger infielder from them, in Luis Garcia Jr. According to the NY Post's Jon Heyman, the Red Sox were one of three teams named to have a strong interest in him.

Garcia is having a very strong season with the Nats, as he is slashing .283/.313/.560/.873 with 20 doubles, 23 home runs, and 76 RBI in 104 games. His bat has some major power, and his SLG leads the National League.

While he may not be a righty, he brings the pop Boston needs, and a year and a half of team control.

Who could Boston give up?

For starters, Boston could offer Jarren Duran, and look to get Garcia and possibly a mid-level prospect in return. Boston is open to moving Duran, and Duran could be an upgrade in their outfield.

Another way could be centered around a starting pitcher, like they did by sending Connelly Early for Mead. A package centered around Patrick Sandoval comes to mind, as while he would be a rental, the Nats could re-sign him if they like what they see.

In the end, Boston needs hitting, and the Nats need pitching. Both have what the other wants, so making one last deal could be beneficial for both Wild Card contenders.
