The Boston Red Sox have a hole at first base with Triston Casas now injured and out for the year. The team is exploring playing Kristian Campbell at first base.
Last Friday, the Red Sox started having Kristian Campbell do first base drills before the game. Campbell has not played since May 17, but is starting tonight in center field. He has been the team's primary second baseman, so it is a slight shock to see him in center field after having him work out at first base. Manager Alex Cora revealed Campbell's timeline for playing first base in an actual game.
"Cora said they’re far away from using Campbell at first base in a game. No chance it happens on the homestand," MassLive's Chris Cotillo wrote on X.
"Said on a scale from 0-10, there's about a '2.5' or '3' on the way there," Cotillo continued on X.
Clearly, Campbell is not close to becoming a viable option at first base for the team. However, the sooner he makes the move, the sooner the Red Sox can think about calling up No.2 prospect Marcelo Mayer. Mayer is also the No. 8 overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.

Mayer is a shortstop, but has been playing some second base this year in Triple-A. Likely because his path to being the team's starting shortstop is blocked by Trevor Story. If Campbell is not playing second base, Mayer would be able to get his shot. Campbell has already shown his defensive versatility by playing in the outfield, but his taking over at first base could be key for the Red Sox.
