The Boston Red Sox made one of the biggest trades of yesterday's deadline, acquiring three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles.
In the deal, the Orioles received three of Boston's top prospects and catcher Carlos Narvaez. Fellow backstop Jake Rogers also went to the Red Sox.
The move could turn out to be an overpay for the Red Sox. Rutschman reaches free agency after the 2027 season, but hasn't been super productive when healthy.
Plus, Rutschman has struggled to stay on the field.
Rutschman has three trips on IL this season
"For the folks in Boston harboring ill feelings about the team’s medical staff, this blockbuster deadline from Craig Breslow may only induce further queasiness. Because Breslow put together a big-time prospect package to acquire Adley Rutschman," The Athletic's Andy McCullough wrote Monday.
"The catcher is a three-time All-Star. He’s been productive at the plate this season. One problem: he’s currently on the injured list with wrist inflammation," McCullough added. This is his third stint on the shelf in 2026. What could go wrong?"
Still, the Red Sox were viewed as trade deadline winners. They improved their Major League roster despite giving up a massive haul to do so.

"Rutschman has the star reputation without the star production. His injury history is worrisome. And Boston gave up a significant amount of minor-league capital — albeit in the volatile form of pitchers — to acquire him," McCullough added.
The Red Sox are 25-5 in their last 30 games. They've risen from the bottom of the standings in the American League to, maybe, World Series hopefuls.
Trading for Rutschman is not a perfect move. But it does show that the AL East club is going for it.
