Red Sox add former Yankees fan favorite reliever amid Garrett Crochet news

The Boston Red Sox are adding a veteran reliever to their bullpen on Thursday.

According to a report from Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, the AL East club has selected the contract of right-hander Tommy Kahnle from Triple-A Worcester.

To open a 40-man roster spot for Kahnle, a former New York Yankees fan favorite who throws a hefty dose of changeups, the Red Sox will need to adjust.

Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote Thursday that left-handed starting pitcher Garrett Crochet makes sense as someone who could be moved to the 60-day injured list.

Boston's ace was originally placed on the IL with left shoulder inflammation but will now miss additional time, as he is dealing with a low-grade left lat strain.

"He didn’t land a big league opportunity when triggering an upward mobility clause at the beginning of May but was reportedly planning to test free agency if the Red Sox didn’t select him to the roster after he triggered a June 1 opt-out clause," Adams wrote about Khanle. "The Sox had until today to make a decision on that clause, and they’ll apparently bring the veteran changeup specialist to the big league bullpen."

Kahnle has pitched for five different organizations in 11 years in the Majors, but six of those seasons were spent with the Yankees.

He made 66 appearances with the Detroit Tigers in 2025, posting a 4.43 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 31 walks in 63 innings.

Kahnle looked sharp in 19.1 Triple-A innings, striking out 25.3% of the batters he faced while posting a 1.40 ERA.
