John Cena fought valiantly in his final WWE match against Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event. Despite giving his all, The Cenation Leader tapped out to The Ring General, marking a significant yet controversial end to his career. Recently, an ex-AEW star spoke about the climax of Cena's retirement showdown.
Former AEW star Matt Hardy gave his thoughts on the epic showdown between Gunther and John Cena. Many believed that Cena tapping out in his final match was a stain on his legacy in WWE. People on social media called out WWE for making The Franchise Player "give up" after promoting "never give up" for years in his career. However, as per Hardy, the decision to have the 17-time World Champion tap out was a poetic end to his career.
In an X post, Matt Hardy said that Cena had been carrying the weight of being the flag bearer of WWE for years. His body has taken a toll from meeting the unrealistic expectations had to being the face of WWE. Therefore, in his final moments, Mr. Hustle Loyalty Respect decided to let go because he thinks WWE is in safer hands now. Hence, he was not afraid of giving up; he was just letting go of the company.
"I think Cena came to the realization that he didn’t have to fight anymore. Didn’t have to carry the company anymore. Didn’t have to live up to his unrealistic expectations anymore. HE JUST LET GO. John found solace in finally being able to quit, hence the smirk. In his mind, he didn’t tap out, he clocked out & was walking away from the burden of being the face & flag bearer of WWE. John Cena finally let go & found it euphoric - His 23 year journey was finally finished." Hardy statedCheck out his X post below:
Here’s my interpretation after sitting on it for 24 hours, @jimmyv3..As Cena has been saying publicly, his body has been breaking down & he can’t take the in-ring abuse anymore. John has lived with the pressure of carrying WWE on his back for 2 decades, which is stressful. It was his final match after getting out of Gunther’s sleeper multiple times. After getting locked in it the final time, he was physically & mentally spent, he had nothing left to give. I think Cena came to the realization that he didn’t have to fight anymore. John Cena finally let go & found it euphoric - His 23 year journey was finally finished.Again, this is merely my interpretation of it. It’s all subjective.
John Cena sends a cryptic message after retiring from WWE
WWE Universe has been buzzing since John Cena bid adieu to the world of professional wrestling. The Franchise Player simply walked out of the arena without sharing any words with anybody. However, following the event, Cena posted a cryptic post on his Instagram as a potential message for his fans.
The 17-time World Champion posted a picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. It is from the exact moment when Darth Vader struck him out in Episode IV- A New Hope. In that moment, Kenobi sacrificed himself after accepting his fate.
It could mean that Cena might have realised that he is past his prime, and now it could be the time to give up. The Franchise Player wrapped his wrestling career of more than two decades at Saturday Night's Main Event with his head held high.
