Real Madrid target added to rivals Club World Cup squad

Real Madrid’s summer transfer plans will be paused as Xabi Alonso's side head off to the FIFA Club World Cup.

With the squad deadline set as June 10, Alonso will not add more players to his travelling party, but his business is not yet wrapped up going into the 2025/26 season.

Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be on the flight to Miami, after quickfire deals were completed for the pair, and left-back could be Alonso's next target.

Los Blancos are tracking their former youth team player, following a superb first season at Benfica, after joining permanently from Manchester United last summer.

However, as per reports from The Athletic, the Spain U21 international has been included in Benfica's own squad for the Club World Cup - in a blow for Real Madrid's push to sign him.

Alonso could still revisit the matter after the tournament, but the door is now closed for the coming weeks, as Benfica look to hold firm over their transfer stance on the 22-year-old.

Is Alvaro Carreras joining Real Madrid?

Real Madrid and Benfica reportedly remain some distance apart in their respective valuations of Carerras with the former looking to secure a deal in the region of €40m [$46m] as his current team hold out for a full €50m [$57m] release clause in Lisbon.

Xabi Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen

Alonso's main option at left-back for the Club World Cup will be Fran Garcia - with Ferland Mendy rated as doubtful - due to an injury suffered in the final weeks of the regular season.

Real Madrid kick off their campaign against Al Hilal on June 18 in Miami followed by a clash with Pachuca on June 22 and a final Group H game with RB Salzburg on June 26.
