Real Madrid push for Arsenal star defender as their priority summer signing

Real Madrid are set to go through wholesale changes this summer. As per reports, Xabi Alonso is all set to take over the managerial role from Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the season.

Defensively, Los Blancos weren't at their best, and therefore, they may opt for changes in the backline.

Injuries haven't been kind to the Real defenders as well as both, Eder Militao and David Alaba missed large chunks of the season remaining on the sidelines nursing injuries.

As per reports on French outlet L'Equipe, the Spanish club has been in talks with Arsenal defender William Saliba's entourage for weeks. They see him as someone who can lead the team from defence.

Saliba's exceptional performances this season haven't gone unnoticed. Apart from a mistake in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg, the Frenchman was pretty flawless against Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are impressed with his preformed in recent times and feel that this is the right time for the 24-year-old to join the club as they aim to revamp their squad with young and prodigious talents.

Will Saliba move to the Spanish capital?

Saliba has only two years left on his contract, and as per L'Equipe, Arsenal have already offered him a contract extension. But the report also suggests that Real Madrid are the only club that can entice the Frenchman and lure him away from North London.

However, a couple of months ago, the 24-year-old dismissed all the rumours in the transfer market as he said that he is happy at Arsenal and would like to continue.

But given the contract situation, this may be the last opportunity for Arsenal to cash in on the Frenchman. According to L'Equipe, Real Madrid are preparing a massive €100 million offer for the French defender.

Now it remains to be seen if Arsenal manage to convince Saliba to stay in North London or if he decides to move to the Spanish capital. In any case, the Gunners will hope to cash in on him rather than allowing him to join on contract expiration.

But for now, Saliba has bigger issues to address as he will lead Arsenal's defence against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal on Wednesday. They need to overturn their 1-0 deficit from the first leg to progress to the final.
