Five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld rolled back the years to smash Dave Chisnall 6-1 and cruise into the final day of the 2025 Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest. It was vintage Barney: maximums raining in, finishes clipped off like they were nothing, and an average of 108 for good measure. The Dutch legend now sits back and waits for the Gerwyn Price or Richard Veenstra clash to discover who he faces next.
Opening up the afternoon’s proceedings, Germany’s Martin Schindler set the tone for the seeds. The Wall lived up to his name by shutting out Ryan Joyce after some sharp finishing. At 2-2, it looked like a real contest – and then Schindi stepped on the gas, left Joyce in the rear-view mirror, and strolled home. Joe Cullen or a certain Luke Littler will be his next test.
Cameron Menzies, meanwhile, had to improve on his ragged round-one display if he wanted to trouble Ross Smith. He did – sort of. The scoring went up, the finishing went down. Luckily for him, Smudger couldn’t hit doubles either. The scrappiest of all scraps saw Cammy recover from 3-1 down to bundle the former European Champion out. It wasn’t pretty, but darts rarely awards style points.

Another big name almost took the early exit. Danny Noppert squeaked past Robert Owen in a last-leg decider. The Welshman fought back bravely from 5-3 down, only to miss his chance at the death. Noppie survives, and if the scriptwriters have their way, he’ll run into compatriot Michael van Gerwen on Sunday – unless Matty Dennant fancies ripping up the script tonight.
Chris Dobey also booked his place in round three after shaking off a slow start against Darren Beveridge. Trailing 3-1, Dobey found the on-switch, reeled off five legs on the bounce, and left Ice Cold wondering what just happened. He’ll meet another Scot, Cammy Menzies next in what promises to be a clash full of energy, nerves, and missed doubles.
Former World Champ, Rob Cross continued his reputation for ruthless efficiency, dispatching Daryl Gurney 6-3. Voltage did everything slightly better – scored heavier, finished cleaner – and when both players are in form, slightly better is enough. Gurney wasn’t bad at all; he was just playing someone sharper. Cross now awaits Damon Heta or Niko Springer.
Then there’s James Wade – darts’ Mr Longevity – who keeps doing James Wade things: nothing flashy, but winning. Luke Woodhouse might wonder how he lost despite better scoring. The answer, Woody, is in the checkout column. Wadey said afterwards he was “lucky” – but 153 and 156 checkouts aren’t lucky, they’re pretty hard to do. Unless of course, you’re a bloke with a PDC major tally in double figures.
As for Kim Huybrechts, he once again got the better of Peter Wright, edging him in a mediocre affair. The Belgian wasn’t at his best, but Wright was further down the ladder. Snakebite even wore the trousers he last pulled on at the 2014 World Championship. Paul Nicholson remembered that gem of trivia, proving he’s got a sharper memory for polyester than most of us have for finals. Sadly for Wright, changing the trousers didn’t change the darts – and he’ll know he didn’t come close to deserving the win.

The Budapest crowd still has plenty to look forward to later this evening, with four world champions and enough star names to fill a flight back to the UK. If the first half of the session is anything to go by, they’d better buckle up.
