When the Baltimore Ravens acquired former Pro Bowl wideout Diontae Johnson from the Carolina Panthers, many believed they found their missing piece on offense. The move came two days after multiple Baltimore playmakers dropped crucial passes in their 29-24 loss to the rival Cleveland Browns.
Johnson was performing well in Carolina, catching 30 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns before being traded. It was the second time this year he was shipped to another squad, as the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Johnson to the Panthers back in March for cornerback Donte Jackson and a pick swap.
Well, the trade didn't exactly work in Baltimore's favor. Johnson never really found a role during his brief stint with the team, logging 39 snaps and just one catch for six yards over seven weeks. During the Ravens' Week 13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Johnson refused to enter the game, which prompted the team to suspend him for their next game following the bye week.
After a dominating day against the New York Giants that included five Lamar Jackson touchdown passes, the Ravens decided to waive Johnson.
If the Ravens thought they weren't going to see Johnson for a long time, they thought wrong. It was announced on Monday that the Houston Texans claimed Johnson off of waivers following the unfortunate injury to Tank Dell, according to Ian Rapoport. It just so happens that the Texans host the Ravens on Christmas day.
It'll be tough for Johnson to learn an offense in just three days, but given Houston's injuries at receiver, he might find himself on the field more times than not. He will almost certainly be looking to burn the team that left a bad taste in his mouth. On the contrary, the Ravens defense will be showing that same fire, as they look to let Johnson know what he's missing out on.
