The Baltimore Ravens are in an unfortunate situation. They just fell in a big way to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Night Football, 33-10. They also lost to the Buffalo Bills 36-10 the week prior.
For the Ravens, of course, the problem here is the quarterback position. The team is coming up against a huge quarterback crisis because franchise signal-caller Lamar Jackson is on injured reserve with an injury, his primary backup Tyler Huntley is out for the season, and rookie Joe Fagnano is struggling. Now, the team has traded for veteran Jacoby Brissett to try and rescue their season, but it's rough.
Now, the NFL is serving a double punishment to one Ravens player for his actions against the Buffalo Bills in the team's Week 8 game. It's like adding insult to injury.
The NFL announces punishments every week in the form of fines to players who break the rules in games that took place the weekend before. "The rules are intended to protect the players from unnecessary risk, promote player safety and emphasize sportsmanship and respect of teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans," the NFL states.
Roquan Smith hit with two NFL fines for actions against the Buffalo Bills
On Saturday, the league released its newest tally of fines and punishments for Week 8. In it, they slapped linebacker Roquan Smith with a $17,911 fine for a facemask penalty in the first quarter at 10:12. The league also fined him another $17,911 for hitting a defenseless player in the first quarter at 14:13.
Both of these are more hefty fines, and they were among the more costly of the weekend. So, Smith has another reason to frown after that loss to the Jags, but this doesn't have to do with the game. The good news is that the funds raised from these fines are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation and NFL Foundation, so the money goes to a good cause.
