Ravens legend expected to retire after 2025 NFL season

The Baltimore Ravens won a Super Bowl in part because they smartly picked a quarterback out of Delaware nearly two decades ago.

Now, that QB, Joe Flacco, may be entering his final NFL season.

Flacco has journeyed a bit since leaving the Ravens, spending time with the Broncos, Colts and now Browns.

But he'll always be remembered first and foremost for his Ravens greatness.

CBS Sports writer Tyler Sullivan predicts this will be Flacco's last NFL season.

"Joe Flacco isn't too far behind (Aaron) Rodgers as the 40-year-old is the second-oldest active player in the league heading into 2025," Sullivan writes. "After a brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts last season, Flacco re-signed with the Cleveland Browns this offseason and could begin the year as the club's starting quarterback. How long he holds that job could depend on how Cleveland's other quarterbacks -- veteran Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders -- develop.

"Regardless, Flacco is not a long-term option for the Browns and is only signed through this upcoming season. That leaves the door open for Flacco to possibly find another job either as a backup or stopgap starter next offseason, or the former Super Bowl champion could hang up his helmet. If he's no longer interested in being a backup, playing through your age-40 season would be a natural cutoff point."

Flacco went 2-4 as a starter for the Colts in 2024, throwing 12 TDs compared to seven interceptions.

In his career, Flacco is 105-86 with 212 touchdown passes and 136 interceptions.

He's still got much of the strong arm that he entered the league with, and it could be enough to win him the Browns' Week 1 starting job this year.

Flacco had already seemed mostly retired after 2022, but he came off his couch to start five games late in 2023 for the Browns, and he played well enough to prolong his career.

Soon enough, though, it might be all done for Flacco.
