Rashid Shaheed could be the Saints’ surprise trade chip before the deadline

With the NFL trade deadline nearing, speculation around the New Orleans Saints’ roster is intensifying. At 1-6, the team appears headed toward a rebuild, and several of its key players are drawing interest from contenders looking to strengthen their offenses.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer noted in his latest mailbag that while teams like the Buffalo Bills have looked into acquiring a top wideout, Chris Olave is expected to stay put for now. Breer explained that a potential move involving Olave “would be on (the Bills’) radar in the 2026 draft.”

That leaves Rashid Shaheed as a more realistic option. Breer called him “an intriguing target,” adding that his expiring contract could make him attainable “for a little bit less.”

Shaheed’s production this season backs the interest: 30 catches for 356 yards and two touchdowns on 45 targets in seven games.

If the Saints receive an offer comparable to a 2026 third-round pick, similar to what they might gain from a compensatory selection in 2027, moving him would make financial sense.

With limited cap flexibility and an ongoing effort to extend Olave, New Orleans may need to cash in on Shaheed’s rising market value before time runs out.

Saints weigh receiver market as contenders circle

League sources told ESPN that multiple teams have reached out to the Saints about both Shaheed and Olave, though the front office appears more open to dealing Shaheed.

General manager Mickey Loomis confirmed to WWL Radio that the team has “fielded calls about a few players” but declined to specify who.

According to sources, the Saints are seeking a third-round draft pick in return for Shaheed, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, and Denver Broncos are reportedly among the most active teams pursuing wide receivers ahead of the Nov. 4 deadline.

ESPN also reported that veteran wideout Brandin Cooks could be moved as well, which would mark the fifth trade of his 12-year career. Meanwhile, Olave emphasized his commitment to staying in New Orleans, saying he and the team were “on the same page” about a long-term deal.

Shaheed, 27, was an All-Pro punt returner in 2023 and has proven himself as both a deep threat and a special teams weapon. For a franchise looking to retool, the Saints might view him as their most valuable trade asset heading into the final stretch before the deadline.
