The Texas Rangers made a few big moves this offseason, with the trade of Marcus Semien for Brandon Nimmo working out great so far this year.
They've also made a big move to upgrade the starting rotation, acquiring a lefty starter from the Washington Nationals for a strong prospect haul.
That move, as USA Today's Bob Nightengale noted, was a move in which the Rangers "struck gold." The reason is clear: this new starter, MacKenzie Gore, has a 2.76 ERA to begin his Rangers tenure.
Rangers 'struck gold' with Gore trade
"The Texas Rangers struck gold with their MacKenzie Gore trade," Nightengale writes. "Gore, who was 5-15 with a 4.17 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 30 starts for the Washington Nationals, is pitching like a Cy Young candidate with the Rangers."
The new Rangers lefty has been dominating this season, with a 2-0 record across three starts with a 2.76 ERA. In 16.1 innings pitched, he's struck out 25 batters and has a WHIP of 0.857.
His 13.9 strikeouts per nine innings is the most in the American League this season, and is a good indicator of how good he's been this year.
More: Jacob DeGrom is only 149 strikeouts from 2,000 for his career
If he were to keep up this hot start to the season, he'd be able to contend with Tarik Skubal and the other top AL pitchers for the Cy Young award.
It's very early, but he's helped the Rangers get to a 7-7 record, as he's been the best starter in the Rangers' rotation so far this season. Neither Nathan Eovaldi nor Jacob deGrom has been as good as Gore.
This trade has worked out great for the Rangers so far, as Gore has been one of the best pitchers in the Majors to begin the season.
