The Texas Rangers have cooled down after a strong start to the 2025 season. They now sit in fourth place in the American League West at 17-18, 3 1/2 games behind the first place Seattle Mariners.
However, a few key additions at the trade deadline could elevate them back to contender status. Their offense has been a problem, and while the bullpen has performed well, they do not have a true closer.
There are plenty of options for the Rangers to pursue at the deadline. A surprising option could emerge in San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report notes that Texas could use a closer and that Suarez could be a candidate.
"We've already noted that Texas will almost certainly be on the hunt for a closer," Miller noted.

"Someone always desperately wants a closer, though, and maybe San Diego capitalizes on that."
An established closer could help the Rangers out in a big way at the deadline. Suarez would be a good candidate too, as he owns a 0.56 ERA in 16 appearances and has saved 14 games already.
He can opt out of his contract at the end of 2025, which makes it possible that the Padres could trade him, and the Rangers have some good prospects they could send San Diego's way in order to complete the deal.
Suarez was an All-Star for the first time in 2024, posting a 2.77 ERA and recording 36 saves for the 93-win Padres during the regular season. But if the Padres are likely to lose him, then it might make sense to trade him.
The Rangers are hungry after finishing 78-84 last year and failing to defend their World Series title. Suarez could get them closer to the prize again.
