The Texas Rangers are trying to make a late season Wild Card push, but it seems they probably won't make it to this year's postseason. This means they can start looking at what they’ll do this offseason to make their team championship-caliber.
Fansided’s Jake Elman believes they’ll make a splash this offseason, as he predicts the Rangers will be the top landing spot for five-time All-Star New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso.
“The Rangers already stole Jacob deGrom away from the Mets, so why not double up and bring Alonso to Texas? To their credit, the Rangers have embraced spending and competing in recent years, a significant reason why they won the 2023 World Series. Plenty of teams elsewhere in the league — and we’re not just talking about the usual candidates like the Pirates, Marlins, and Rays — could afford (pun only partly intended) to learn from Texas,” Elman wrote.
This season, Alonso has slashed .270/.344/.520/.865, ripped 36 homers, and gotten 119 RBI. He would be a clear upgrade from the Rangers’ current first baseman, Jake Burger, who is only hitting .243 with 16 home runs.
Alonso makes a lot of sense for the Rangers. He would be a clear upgrade from Burger at first base, and the pop he brings to the lineup would be insane. On a team where no one has more than 21 homers, Alonso would be amazing for clearing the bases as a cleanup hitter.
Hopefully the Rangers pursue Alonso, as he could turn them from just missing the playoffs into being World Series contenders once again.
