Buccaneers ready to 'go to war' with Baker Mayfield

1 hour ago 3

We know that Baker Mayfield wears his emotions on his sleeve, and it appears the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, unlike previous franchises, have leaned into that, and the results have been superb.

With Mayfield finally finding a place to call home, and one where he can be himself, he's playing some of the best football of his career, and it is his willingness to put his body on the line time and time again to do whatever it takes to win that has endeared him to the fans and his teammates.

Against the Houston Texans, facing a fourth-and-10 in the fourth quarter, Mayfield took off on a 15-yard run and took a couple of shots in the process as he was willing to do whatever it took to win the game for his team.

And that's something that doesn't surprise Bucky Irving.

"That's just who he is," Irving said. "He a dog, man. I'll go to war with that guy any day of the week versus whoever. It don't matter. But when you have somebody like that on your football team that's willing to put his body on the line and win football games, just a blessing."

Mayfield's Buccaneers resurgence good for the soul

After his time in Carolina ended, Mayfield looked like he wasn't going to get another shot in the NFL as a starter, but Sean McVay gave him a shot with the Los Angeles Rams for a handful of games, and he led a game-winning drive over the Las Vegas Raiders.

That offseason, the Buccaneers signed him, and he beat out Kyle Trask for the starting role, and the rest is history.

Multiple Pro Bowls, division titles, and coming off the best season of his career last year (4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns), Baker is now the player the Cleveland Browns wanted him to be.

And if the Buccaneers are to challenge for the NFC and the Super Bowl, it will be because Mayfield will put his body on the line to ensure his team wins.
