Rangers and Astros enter final six games in winner-take-all AL West race

The American League West could produce the strangest division champion of the 2026 MLB season. It might also deliver the most dramatic finish.

The Texas Rangers enter the final six games at 78-78, holding a one-game advantage over the 77-79 Houston Astros. Neither team has managed to climb above .500, but one of them will receive a playoff berth and host a best-of-three Wild Card Series.

The formula appears simple for Texas. Finish with a better record than Houston and the division belongs to the Rangers. Finishing tied will not be enough.

Houston owns the tiebreaker, meaning the Astros only need to match Texas in the standings to win the division. The Rangers effectively must protect a two-game advantage over the final week. That creates six days of scoreboard watching across three cities.

Rangers control race but cannot afford tie

Texas hosts the New York Mets for three games before traveling to Minnesota for its final series against the Twins. The Rangers have won six of their last 10 games, but their minus-34 run differential illustrates how narrow their margin has been throughout the season.

New York is already eliminated and enters the series with a 71-85 record. Minnesota has also been eliminated at 73-83. Those records make Texas’ schedule look manageable, but playing eliminated opponents during the final week can be dangerous. The Mets and Twins can operate without postseason pressure while the Rangers must treat every mistake as potentially season-ending.

Texas’ pitching decisions will be especially important. Jacob deGrom remains the pitcher the Rangers would most want on the mound in a decisive game, but his schedule could affect his availability for a potential Wild Card Series. Nathan Eovaldi could also become an important part of the final-week rotation if he is healthy enough to handle a larger workload.

The Rangers must balance winning the division with keeping their best pitchers available for Tuesday’s playoff opener. That problem disappears if Texas fails to reach October.

Astros have favorable finish after costly sweep

Houston enters the final week after being swept at home by the Atlanta Braves. The Astros have lost three consecutive games and seven of their last 10, allowing the Rangers to move into first place.

Houston will play all six remaining games on the road. The Astros begin with two against the Seattle Mariners before playing four against the Athletics.

Seattle and the Athletics are both eliminated. The two teams entered the week with a combined record of 134-178. That gives Houston a realistic opportunity to recover from its disastrous weekend.

The Astros will not have to face Atlanta again, but they must solve an offense that has contributed to a minus-59 run differential. Houston has allowed 747 runs while scoring 688. The Astros’ tiebreaker advantage changes the race significantly. If Texas goes 3-3, Houston can win the division by finishing 4-2. If the Rangers go 4-2, the Astros must go 5-1.

A 6-0 finish by Texas would eliminate Houston regardless of what the Astros do.

AL West loser could miss playoffs entirely

The division race is not simply about which team gets to host a playoff series.The loser could be eliminated.

Texas sits two games behind the Chicago White Sox for the final AL Wild Card, but Chicago owns the tiebreaker. Houston is three games behind the White Sox, although the Astros hold the tiebreaker over Chicago. Both AL West teams have a possible Wild Card route, but neither can count on it.

That places all the pressure on winning the division. Texas has the one-game lead. Houston has the tiebreaker and the softer schedule.

After 156 games, neither club has separated itself from the other. The final six will determine which flawed contender receives an opportunity to become dangerous in October.
