Rams’ rookie quarterback Ty Simpson reveals best piece of advice from Matthew Stafford

Ty Simpson is a day away from making his NFL debut when the Los Angeles Rams travel to play the Kansas City Chiefs this Saturday.

With a high amount of anticipation in front of him, Simpson revealed to reporters on Thursday some of the best advice Matthew Stafford has given him.

“To just be yourself,” Simpson said. “… ‘Don’t try to be somebody else; just do it your way.”

Simpson added that Stafford told him, “A lot of times people get caught up in the mess of trying to do like somebody else, trying to be like whoever, but it is more about finding who you are and how things work and tick.”

The next three weeks will be a crucial learning period for Simpson as he will likely see a large amount of playing time before the regular season, as Stafford will likely not take a preseason snap.

Head coach Sean McVay will also get a chance to see what his rookie quarterback is made of after the Rams made a leap of faith by selecting him with the No.13 overall at the NFL Draft this past spring.

When the Rams selected him, they made their intentions clear. He will be sitting under Stafford’s wing as the quarterback of the future for the Rams.

Stafford’s been embracing the mentorship role with Simpson, as the young rookie quarterback revealed the veteran asked him how he’s feeling about playing in his first NFL game.

“I told him I was excited. It’s a great opportunity for me to play,” Simpson said. “The best advice that he gave me was, ‘Just go let it rip. It’s nothing that you haven’t done before. Just go out there and play with the rules, see the play clock, understand what your problems are, and go let it rip.”

Aside from Stafford being a key part in mentoring him, he added that veteran quarterback Stetson Bennett and head coach McVay have been great role models and mentors for him to lean on.

“Not only are we going to get better, but it is a growth moment where we all come together and help the team,” Simpson said.
