Rams' long-term outlook with Matthew Stafford raises concerns at age 37

3 hours ago 1

It seems as if the Los Angeles Rams have nothing to be worried about while starting the 2025 season with a 5-2 record, and quarterback Matthew Stafford is just coming off a five-touchdown frenzy in their Week 7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, just a few months ago, Stafford's status for the start of the season was a concerning conversation while going through the preseason, dealing with a back injury. He's at the point in his career where he isn't getting any younger, and this specific subject is something that should be talked about.

As he turns 38 in early 2026, Stafford's contract with the Rams expires after the 2026 season. Could these factors mean that his time is ticking as the franchise quarterback in Los Angeles?

Jeremy Fowler: Stafford, Rams situation could reach a 'boiling point'

The contract between the Rams and Matthew Stafford has been an interesting one to take note of after the former No. 1 overall pick in 2009 was traded to Los Angeles before the 2021 season.

This past offseason, there was speculation that Stafford wasn't going to be the guy for the Rams while trying to put together a new deal for the future. However, after staying patient, a two-year, $84 million deal was agreed upon.

In a recent article by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano, it was noted, "The situation could reach a boiling point again this offseason if Stafford continues to play lights out. His deal probably needs to be addressed in some form, but both parties have played this perfectly, creating a sometimes uneasy but ultimately flourishing relationship."

Of course, there's nothing to worry about if Stafford can continue to lead the league in passing touchdowns (17), be top five in passing yards (1,866), and top 10 in passer rating (66.0).

There's still a lot of the 2025 season to be played, but Stafford looks as if he's playing with a chip on his shoulder in the age-37 season.
